About the Artist
Biography - Viyki Turnbull
I am fascinated by objects that have intimate associations with how they are used and the body. This enquiry has developed into creating installations offsetting widely found objects alongside careful architectural drawings and fabric, where I use scale and formal compositions to create intriguing alternatives to their usual meanings.
Working with the Building Exploratory created access and time to explore very different architectural spaces and how they were defined through their use as faith buildings. Through a process of working with faith leaders, students and teachers, these faith chests emerged from a playful and critical response to absence and ritual through drawing, video, textiles and sculpture.
My work often emerges in this way in collaboration with artists and the public alongside my studio practice. As an ongoing part of this, I work with a number of arts and cultural institutions including TATE Modern and the National Portrait Gallery.
