St Paul's Church
Historical Text
This church was built in 1958-60, and replaced an earlier church on the same site, damaged during the Second World War. It was an innovative and influential Modernist design, a simple space that reflected a new and back-to-basics approach to church worship and the relationship of a priest to his congregation. The mosaic decoration was added later. Grade II listed.
Artistic Response
Images of people are used because it is they, more than the architecture, that 'make' a faith building and represent its best values. The informality of the visit meant the students lost many of their inhibitions and the faith chest is intended to represent this feeling of freedom and fun, implied by the chaotic wire structures and a distinct lack of order.
