Historical Text
This great stone church was built in 1714-1729, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It was gutted in the Second World War, but the outside remains intact. In the 1960s a smaller church was built within the old walls. Grade I listed.
Artistic Response
Working with the signs and symbols drawn by the students on their visit to the church, the work is made up of two layers of images. The images are cut-outs of translucent pergamenta paper which let colour and light through. Acting as filter it depicts our visual distillation of the essence of the building.
