Poplar Baptist Church
Historical Text
The church was built in 1882-3. After damage during the Second World War, a smaller new church was opened in 1951, when two congregations merged to form the Poplar and Berger Baptist Tabernacle. Later fundraising provided the money to build the larger building next door, for the Sunday school and other church activities.
Artistic Response
The kaleidoscope contains images that the students were particularly drawn to on their visit to the church. The church was in fact quite devoid of ornament but the pupils saw shapes and patterns in unusual places - the ceiling, the windows and the pews. Turning the kaleidoscope you are rewarded with glimpses of these images which together are reminiscent of a rose window.
