East London Mosque
Historical Text
This mosque has a long history. Following a campaign to find premises that began in 1905 it was established in houses on Commercial Road in 1941. It moved to its present site in Whitechapel Road in 1975, and into a new purpose-built mosque in 1985, of yellow brick with red-brick trim, a golden dome and minarets, with space for 2,000 worshippers.
Artistic Response
Sarah Carne working with Sir John Cass Cof E Secondary School, Year 8. The visit to the East London Mosque coincided with Friday prayers so it was appropriate that behaviour was restrained and respectful of the people praying. The arrangement of the images within the faith chest represents the Pillars of Islam with the layers rising in a formal structure, a response to the behaviour required.
